Before Panthers Head Coach Dave Canales could even think of fixing the passing game, he wanted to build around the running game.
One of the pillars of this revamped running game is newly acquired Guard Damien Lewis. The 2020 PFWA All-Rookie selection’s approach to the game is exactly what the Panthers need.
“He is a stud,” Panthers Guard Rob Hunt says of Lewis, “ He’s one of those old school big-bodied guards (that’ll) put his hands on you..get physical. Get gritty. Likes to play in the phone booth type of guy.”
After the first padded practice of the season, Lewis sat down with Carolina Blitz to talk about reuniting with Canales and his expectations for the year ahead.
You’ve been with Coach Canales in Seattle. Can you give us insight on how he is as a coach. Anything change from your time together with the Seahawks to now?
“Dave is so great. It’s just a blessing to be with him here in Carolina. He’s a great coach. He knows what he’s doing. He’s building the team the right way. He’s got a great group of guys this offseason, and he’s just stacking. We’re trying to take this program to a whole other level.
I’ve been watching film on you, and I noticed that you are dangerous in zone and gap coverages. Has that always been in your bag?
I can do some of everything, you know. I just needed the opportunity to get on the team and showcase my talents. Whatever the coach needs me to do, I’m that guy. I come to work everyday, be coachable, try the be the best teammate I can be, and go out here and put it all together.
Last season, the Panthers gave up 65 sacks. From the perspective of an opponent, were there more technical breakdowns than just being outmuscled?
I can’t speak on last year because I’m new to the team. I’m just here to help the guys be better, and come out here and win games. It’s a new year.
In film, I noticed that you can flip your hips to gain inside leverage with your combo blocks. You’re agile. Have you played any other sports growing up?
I ran track and did some powerlifting. I played basketball, shot a little hoop. I just thank God that he gifted me with the talent to come out here and put it all together. Like I told you earlier, I just needed the opportunity to be on the fielding showcase my talent, and try to help the guys around me.
