Wednesday, the Carolina Panthers held their first training camp practice in front of hundreds of fans at Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC. Here are three things we learned during the post-practice press conferences.
Bryce Young – QB1
While this news isn’t shocking, it is new. During the offseason head coach Frank Reich stopped short of naming the team’s number one draft pick, Bryce Young, the official starter. That ended Wednesday after practice. When asked by a reporter if Bryce is QB1, Reich didn’t hesitate confirming in the inevitable.
Spida’s In
Brian Burns and the Panthers have been in contract extension talks all summer. Carolina made it clear last season, when they turned down offers for multiple first round picks, that retaining their top edge rusher is a priority. Some veterans opt to sit out of training camp, in order to nudge along the negotiation process, but Burns said that was never an option for him – adding that “what we’ve got building is bigger than that.”
Rookie Connection
Wide receiver Jonathan Mingo was noticeably missing when Bryce Young and the Panthers’ receiving corps got together to workout in Texas, but today we learned Carolina’s top two draft picks, did get together in California for week to work on timing and pick each other’s brains.
