Long-term Memory: Duke Takes Shot at Missed Call In Tweet Congratulating Jon Scheyer on a Successful Season

The Duke Blue Devils’ men’s basketball team was just one win…or call…away from a share of the ACC regular season title – and they haven’t forgotten about it.

In a tweet congratulating head coach Jon Scheyer on a successful first season, all of Scheyer’s accomplishments were listed, including being “One “we consider this matter closed” away from ACC co-champs.”

The “We consider this matter closed” comment refers back to the Blue Devils’ loss at Virginia, where the officials missed a crucial call at the end of regulation which would’ve sent freshman Kyle Filipowski to the free throw line with a chance to win the game. Duke fell to UVA, 69-62, in overtime. After the loss the ACC issued a formal statement acknowledging the error and “closing the matter.”

Duke has every right to lament the missed call from that crucial loss and take shots on Twitter because of it. That error changed their ACC Tournament seeding from two to four and will potentially affect their NCAA Tournament seeding. I’m all for a good petty comment and this one was well executed by the Blue Devils’ social team.
