Duke Names Riley Leonard Starting Quarterback

After weeks of speculations the cat is out of the bag. Who will ignite coach Mike Elko’s era in Durham?

Sunday the team announced sophomore Riley Leonard will be starting quarterback when the team opens their season against Temple.

“After a very intense quarterback battle this fall, we have decided to go with Riley Leonard as our starting quarterback,” Elko said. “We are excited to see him lead our team this fall, and we also know that Jordan Moore will be an impact player for our offense in many roles as well.”

Leonard, a native of Fairhope, Ala., saw action in seven games during his rookie season, making one start against Virginia Tech. In 164 career snaps, he has completed 37-of-62 (.597) pass attempts for 381 yards with one touchdown and one interception while rushing 47 times for 173 yards (3.68) and two scores.

Riley is expected to lead a Blue Devil team that is searching for identity, grit and overall respect. Picked to finish dead last in the ACC, this team failed to register a single ACC win just a year ago.

Expect to see some split reps with sophomore Jordan Moore, who is making waves throughout practice with his ability to come out of the backfield and wideout.

Duke’s 2022 season opener is Friday against Temple. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium and will be broadcast on ACC Network.
