In a text to ESPN Senior NFL Insider Adam Schefter, Cam Newton says he has options, but he’s waiting on the right team and the right opportunity.
“I have teams that are interested in signing me,” Newton said. “I am waiting on the best fit as it pertains to winning a championship and getting a fair chance to play.”
The Panthers are in the mix and according to Head Coach Matt Rhule, the team is open to bringing him back.
“Everything has to be right for our organization and right for him.”
So the Panthers are open to bringing him back. To me, it seems as if the interest is out of convenience. Carolina didn’t get Deshaun Watson. They weren’t interested in Baker Mayfield or Jimmy G. The Panthers don’t have many options at quarterback, so they are open to re-signing Newton if everything is right for both sides.
Newton wants a fair chance to play and wants to contend for a championship. Can he get either in Carolina?
On one hand, they did bring Newton in during the second half of last season right off the street and having a full season to show he can still play in the league seems fair. On the other hand, Newton was blamed for the Panthers’ issues during that stretch. Some of the blame was warranted, but not all of it.
The Panthers are far from a Super Bowl Contender, but who are the options Newton is referring to? Did he put it out there to bolster value? Will the Panthers resign him or should they?
With the draft less than a month away, we should know the answers to these questions soon.
