According to Pro Football Networks, Aaron Wilson, the Carolina Panthers have been working in their search for their next quarterback, and most of that work has been focused on embattled quarterback Deshaun Watson.
“In particular, the Carolina Panthers are seriously engaged in wanting to trade for the three-time Pro Bowl selection, with one source characterizing their level of interest as all-in,” Wilson writes “Panthers owner David Tepper previously hired an investigator thoroughly to look into Watsons’ legal issues.”
This is a wise move by Tepper and the front office. Yes, Carolina is in need of a passer and yes Watson, in terms of on-field production, could be seen as an upgrade. But Watson’s allegations make it hard for the Panthers not to do their due diligence and investigate. The Panthers want to know what they are getting into off the field as well as on the field. It’s very understandable.
For the sake of discussion, let’s say that Watson is cleared of all charges and the Panthers are all-in like Wilson is implying. How can the Panthers acquire Watson? What are they willing to give up in a trade? What should they give up? Watson has a no-trade clause in his current contract with the Texans and will have to sign off on any trade. If Watson were to relinquish his no-trade clause, what can the Panthers offer?
