Duke freshman AJ Griffin has been named ACC Freshman of the Week after averaging 11.5 points and 4.0 rebounds over two home wins.
Griffin shot 8-of-15 (.600) from the field in the Blue Devils’ wins over Gardner-Webb on Tuesday and Lafayette on Friday, coming off the bench in both contests. The Ossining, N.Y., native brought down a career-high six rebounds to go with five points and two assists in 16 minutes against Gardner-Webb. He followed up with a career-high 18 points in the Lafayette win on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor, including 4-of-6 from three-point range. Fourteen of his points, including all four three-pointers, came in the second half to help Duke pull away in a 33-point victory.
The freshman finished the week with 23 points and eight rebounds after totaling seven points and four boards over Duke’s first three games. He leads the Blue Devils in three-point field goal percentage this season, shooting .462 (6-of-13) from beyond the arc.
Griffin is Duke’s second consecutive ACC Freshman of the Week after Paolo Banchero earned the honor on Nov. 15. Over the last eight-plus seasons, Duke has had an ACC Freshman of the Week in 66 of a possible 138 weeks. Twenty different Blue Devils have won the award at least once in that time.
No. 5 Duke (5-0) wraps up a five-game home stand on Monday night when it hosts The Citadel (3-1) at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Tipoff is set for 9 p.m. on ACC Network.
