The defending ACC Champion NC State women’s basketball team joined a rare list tonight, picking up their second win over a top-ranked team this season as the Wolfpack defeated previously unbeaten Louisville in dominating fashion 74-60.
Both wins have come on the road for the Wolfpack. Earlier this season, NC State traveled down to Columbia, SC and defeated then top-ranked South Carolina 54 46. This victory might just be a little sweeter for the Wolfpack with this being an ACC foe with both teams sitting at the top of the standings. The win was also important because NC State was coming off their first loss of the season against Virginia Tech last Thursday.
Star center Elissa Cunane missed the last few games after NC State’s most recent Covid shutdown, but returned with a vengeance against the Cardinals – totaling 16 points and 6 rebounds. Four players finished in double figures with all scoring 15 points or more.
According to Bryan Ives, NC State is the first women’s basketball team to beat the AP top-ranked team twice in the same season since Stanford did it in the 2007-08 season. The win tonight is also the fourth overall win over the top-ranked team in program history.
When it’s all said it done…there should be no question where the top-ranked team resides…and that’s in Raleigh.
