Report: Cameron Crazies’ Plan to Host UMBC Star for UVA Game Foiled

Last year UMBC shocked the world by becoming the first 16th seed to beat a top seed in the NCAA Tournament when they defeated Virginia 74-54.  The Cameron Crazies didn’t plan on letting UVA forget about the “L” when they traveled to Duke for Saturday’s showdown.

In December, a Go Fund Me campaign was created to raise money to bring Retrievers’ guard KJ Maura, who dropped 28 points in the historic upset, to the game.

Imagine the fear of God in Kyle Guy’s eyes when he sees KJ Maura on the sideline. He keeps his eyes trained on the man who knocked him out of the 2018 NCAA Tournament in the biggest upset in March Madness history. His worst college moment, relived in Cameron.

Then, he turns his eyes back to the court just in time to see Zion Williamson absolutely posterizing him.

This can be our reality. We just need to pay for KJ’s flight. Contribute today, and we’ll make sure Virginia finds its special place in Hell.

Enough money was raised to fly Maura out and the the former guard planned to attend, but according to SB Nation, UMBC Head Coach Ryan Odom was instrumental in foiling plans for the ultimate troll.

In a post on the K-Ville Nation Facebook group (which is closed to the public), fundraiser starters Steve Hassey and Peter Potash revealed that Maura will not be attending the game due in large part to a request made by UMBC head coach Ryan Odom.

“UMBC’s coach got wind of his arrival, and he wants their squad to move on from the greatest NCAA Tournament upset of all time,” the post reads. “Ultimately, he called Coach K multiple times, and [Mike Krzyzewski] had to request that KJ not be in attendance.”

Not sure how well the plan would’ve gone over since UVA point guard, Kyle Guy, caught wind of it and encouraged fundraising efforts.

Saturday’s game tips-off at 6:00pm on ESPN.
