As a former student, ever since I can remember the 49ers have wanted a crack at the other UNC. Charlotte hasn’t had to opportunity to compete for state bragging rights since facing the Tar Heels in the second round of the 1998 NCAA Tournament, when the Heels just barely escaped defeat. Finally, 49er fans are getting what they’ve wanted…another chance to beat UNC. It was announced Wednesday that the two schools are scheduled to play a home and home series in 2024 and 2025.
“We are excited that we are able to announce this series, both for our program and our fans,” said 49ers Director of Athletics Judy Rose. “This is another step in the many that we have taken in the development of our program. With our move to the FBS and into Conference USA, we have continued to upgrade our schedule. Today is another important step.”
The games are scheduled for September 7, 2024 in Chapel Hill and September 6, 2025 in Charlotte.
Still a long time to wait, but something is better than nothing. Depending on how Charlotte’s football program progresses, this could be one of the state’s budding rivalries.
