In an interview with ESPN, Coach K admitted that he has a secret Twitter account to check on his players’ social media practices.
“I follow guys. I don’t want to be on Twitter because I don’t care. I don’t want their opinions. I don’t need to show that I have X amount of followers. But I follow a lot of people on Twitter, under an alias. I tell my guys, ‘I’m following you.’ Then if I see something, you text them, you gotta watch. But there are a lot of cool things that they do. I do like that they do it.”
But Jahlil Okafor says it’s no secret when coach is lurking on social media – for one hilarious reason.
“Everybody knows,” said former Duke player Jahlil Okafor at a pre-NBA draft event for NBA Cares. “When we’re on the bus, we always see his phone. He has the words really big. So we don’t know his Twitter name but we know he sees us on Instagram, we know he sees us on Twitter.”
This is great. Parents, coaches and other authority figures stay lurking on social media to see what’s going on, but just like Okafor says he and his teammates know what’s gong on, we usually know, too. Either way it’s not that bad. We know their intentions are good.
