During his press conference at the NFL combine Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales announced that offensive coordinator Brad Idzik will call plays this upcoming season.
“Going into the season Brad Idzik will be calling plays for the Panthers,” Canales said. “This is something that all of us collectively have talked about as an organization.”
The decision was made by Canales in hopes freeing up his time to be more involved in other aspects of the team. And while this change allows him to be more honed in on in-game management, it opens the door for increased player interaction as well.
“It goes beyond that. It’s also being able to affect and impact your players as guys come on and off the field. To be able to connect with them. To see something fundamentally I know can help this player. Let’s not wait until Monday when I watch the film to be able to help somebody.”
Canales admitted that the process of giving up playcalling duties was a humbling one, but it was also one that was done in the best interest of the Carolina Panthers.
