How Caleb Wilson Used All-American Experience to Fuel Him For UNC’s Matchup Against Kansas

#8 Wilson smiles before inbounding

UNC freshman Caleb Wilson changes the wallpaper on his phone often – but it’s not for aesthetics, it’s for motivation.

“People think I joke when I say I put stuff on the wallpaper of my phone,” Wilson said after the Tar Heels’ 87-74 win over Kansas. “I put stuff on my wallpaper before I play to make sure I’m pissed.”

“I feel like I’ve been disrespected in polls. People telling me I’m not a top three freshman in the ACC.”

Wilson received two votes for ACC Rookie of the year behind Louisville’s Mikel Brown Jr (3) and Duke’s Cameron Booker (43) – who won the award. He was also named to the preseason All-ACC second team.

But that’s not good enough for Caleb, who believes he’s one of the best freshmen in the country and has the numbers to prove it – he scored a game high 22 points in the Tar Heels’ season opener against Central Arkansas and a game high 24 points Friday night against Kansas.

Caleb keeps receipts.

“It’s a list every game,” he told us.

So what motivational wallpaper did he pick ahead his first blue blood battle?

“Today was my feeling after the McDonald’s All American Game when I didn’t touch the ball…and Darryn Peterson was on my team. That was my wallpaper.”

Peterson, who scored a team-high 22 points for the Jayhawks in the loss, won co-MVP after scoring 18 points during the All-American game Wilson used as motivation.

“So this was real personal,” I followed up. “Yeah,” Wilson said with a straight face.

And he’s just getting started.

“I’m just going to keep coming out here and killing people. I’ve got a list on my phone and it’s no where near done.”
