Panthers legend Steve Smith has never been one to hold is tongue. During his weekly Monday segment on The Kyle Bailey Show on WFNZ, Smith was asked about the widespread criticism second year wide receiver Xavier Legette has received after his slow start to the season and he didn’t hesitate to say exactly how he felt.
“Here’s where the football player in me is going to come out,” Smith began. “That’s what this city does well, is b*tch and complain. When we went to the Super Bowl in 2003, I never forgot how people treated us my rookie year when we were 1-15. I know some people will not like hearing this, but if you’re going to ride and die with your team, ride or die. That’s probably the problem with this weak a** city, is the fair weather fans.”
Fans didn’t take kindly to Smith’s harsh criticism.
Wednesday Steve Smith admitted that his comments could have been worded better, but clapped back those who allegedly threatened him in his direct messages.
“Based on the DM’s I’ve been getting from people. What I said and now you say you’re going to threaten me and pull up on me. I don’t think that’s a good idea. I love this city. I invest in this city. My foundation is in this city, but all these comments in my DM’s talking about you’re going to pull up on me, you’re going to threaten me…we don’t need all that.”
