The Panthers Have Not Shut the Door on Hunter Renfrow

Veteran wide receiver Hunter Renfrow was among the Panthers’ final cuts Tuesday to get the league-mandated 53-man roster. Since parting ways with Renfrow Carolina traded Adam Theilen, their most tenured receiver, to the Minnesota Vikings. With the traded Carolina’s weaponry for third-year quarterback Bryce Young now has an average experience of 1.7 years – which is quite young. Renfrow could help with that, leaving the door open for a potential return.

“We’ve been in constant communication with Hunter since yesterday,” head coach Dave Canales said during a press conference Wednesday. “He’s talking to his family and his agent. We have a couple of things on the table for him and we’re just taking things one day at a time to see where he’s at.”

Hunter is known as a route technician – seemingly always finding windows to get open – but it was his inconsistency that concerned Canales.

“I want to be able to count on Hunter to be as good as he was the whole time. I saw some peaks, but I also saw some dips in terms of his performance. I felt like in fairness to the whole group and in fairness to the team I wanted to make sure that he knew that I want to be a part of your future. I don’t think right now is the time initially.”

Although Canales wouldn’t go into detail about what options the team is exploring in terms of bring back Renfrow, it seems like the ball is in his court. I expect the two sides will come to a conclusion sooner than later.
