Day two of free agency wasn’t as active for the Carolina Panthers, but they did make a few moves. Here’s a recap of of the day.
The Cut
The Panthers are now in the market for another running back after releasing Miles Sanders. According to reports Sanders and Carolina were negotiating a restructure of his four-year $25.4 million contract, but when talks stalled Carolina decided to release the seven year veteran.
Sanders signed with the Panthers in 2023, coming off a career season in Philadelphia. Expectations were that he would be able to build on his impressive 1,269 total yards in 2022, but the former Penn State standout never caught on and ultimately lost his starting job to Chuba Hubbard.
Miles’ release, along with a knee injury that’s expected to keep 2024 2nd round draft pick Jonothan Brooks sidelined for the entire 2025 season, means the Panthers are in the market for a new running back. As of Tuesday the only players on the roster at that position are Hubbard, Brooks and practice-squader Emani Bailey.
Carolina could address their new vacancy through the draft or with one several free agent running backs still available including, JK Dobbins, Rico Dowdle, Kenneth Gainwell and Nick Chubb.
The rushing attack is a priority for head coach Dave Canales, so expect the Panthers to place an emphasis on securing a formidable option alongside Chuba Hubbard.
New Kicker
The Panthers signed former Buffalo Bills’ punter Sam Martin to a one-year deal worth $3 million. Johnny Hekker, who has filled that role since 2022, signed with the Tennessee Titans
Brady’s Byke
In one of their most underrated moves of the free agency period, the Panthers agreed to terms with offensive lineman Brady Christensen. Christensen, who can play nearly every position along the offensive line, agreed to a one-year $2.787 fully guaranteed contract. Brady adds depth and versatility to an offensive line that was much improved last year. We’re always hearing about how important continuity is in that room, and with the move the Panthers’ return all of their key pieces.
Day three of free agency is on deck. The Panthers now have a need at running back and still need to fill voids at linebacker, safety and add another weapon for Bryce Young.
