CHAPEL HILL, N.C. –– In a crucial ACC matchup, freshman Ian Jackson returned to his home state in spectacular fashion, leading North Carolina to a pivotal 88-82 victory over Syracuse at the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday evening. The win snapped the Tar Heels’ troubling four-game road losing streak and bolstered their postseason aspirations.
Jackson, the New York native who had struggled recently with just 20 points over his previous four games, found his rhythm in familiar territory. Drawing energy from presumably a strong contingent of hometown supporters, he exploded for 23 points, including a 5-of-10 performance from beyond the arc. The freshman’s resurgence couldn’t have come at a better time for the Tar Heels, who have consistently performed better when Jackson reaches double figures.
The game also marked a breakthrough for Jae’Lyn Withers, who delivered his most impressive performance of the season in his second consecutive start. Withers, who hadn’t scored in double figures since Nov. 26, played with visible determination, posting 19 points, six rebounds, and three blocks before fouling out with 1:45 remaining. His unexpected contribution provided the Tar Heels with a crucial secondary scoring option.
While North Carolina maintained the lead throughout the contest, Syracuse mounted a late rally that threatened to continue the team’s road woes. However, freshman point guard Elliot Cadeau came up clutch, executing a skillful spin move past his defender for a critical layup in the final minute to secure the victory.
The win improved North Carolina’s record to 15-11 overall and 8-6 in ACC play, keeping their postseason hopes alive. Though the Tar Heels have made a habit of playing close games this season, their ability to close out this road victory could prove pivotal as they enter the final stretch of their conference schedule.
The Tar Heels will look to build on this momentum when they return home to the Dean E. Smith Center to host rival NC State on Wednesday, Feb. 19th.
