Xavier Legette’s Self Assessment After His First Day of Training Camp is Exactly What You Want From a Rookie

Anyone watching the Carolina Panthers’ first day of training camp wouldn’t call out 2024 first round draft pick Xavier Legette for having a bad practice. He looked engaged and didn’t have any dropped balls, but not having a bad practice isn’t good enough for the former South Carolina Gamecock.

“I feel like it wasn’t my best,” Legette said when asked how he felt after the first training camp session.

“Just having more catches,” Xavier continued when asked to elaborate on what specifically didn’t go well for him. “I didn’t have any today. And really getting open a little better than I was by mainly using my hands.”

“I get upset with myself about things like that when I feel like I didn’t have the best day and leave everything out there on the field.”

Legette was tougher on himself than anyone else would’ve been and that’s a good thing. It shows a level of self awareness, maturity and competitiveness not always seen from rookies. Xavier doesn’t just want to be good during games; he wants to be good at all times – including practice.

That’s the “dog” mentality general manager Dan Morgan has spoken about wanting on this Panthers team.
