Highlights from the Tar Heels’ 2024 Football Schedule

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. –– On Wednesday, the ACC released North Carolina’s 2024 football slate.

The Tar Heels will begin their season on Aug. 29 at Minnesota. They then have three non-conference matchups against UNC Charlotte, NC Central, and James Madison at home in Kenan Stadium.

ACC play will begin the following weekend on Sept. 28 as the Tar Heels travel down Tobacco Road to face the Blue Devils in Durham. That game will be followed by Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech, Virginia, Florida State, Wake Forest, Boston College and N.C. State to close out the year.

Last season, UNC bested Minnesota and Duke and scraped up an impressive win at Pittsburgh, but the highs were brief as the Tar Heels suffered back-to-back losses to the Cavaliers and Yellow Jackets. They also blew their regular season finale with a 39-20 loss to the Wolfpack on Nov. 25, 2023. UNC went on to lose to West Virginia in Duke’s Mayo Bowl on Dec. 27. They will not face any of the ACC’s three newest members—Cal, Stanford and SMU—until the 2025 season.

In 2023, the Seminoles prevailed over the conference with a perfect 8-0 record. UNC hasn’t faced them since 2021 where they lost at home 35-25. North Carolina finished its 2023 campaign with a 8-5 record (4-4 ACC) and finished eighth in the conference out of 14 football member schools.

With new players and personnel in their scheme, the Tar Heels are hoping to turn things around and make strides as ACC championship contender – an area where they fell far from last year. UNC last made an appearance in the championship game in 2022 when they lost to Clemson. They haven’t won the chip since 1980.
