Statistically, Carolina Panthers’ defensive lineman Derrick Brown is having the best season of his career. Through 16 games, the 4th year tackle out of Auburn has 96 total tackles (51 solo and third 45 assited) – 29 more that what he finished with last year and just three shy of breaking the NFL single-season record of 98 set by Miami defensive lineman Christian Wilkins just a year ago.
But surprisingly, when I asked Brown about his breakout season ahead of the Panthers’ week at 16 matchup against the Jaguars, he said he fells like he played better last year.
“To be honest, I feel like I played better last year,” Brown told Carolina Blitz. “I just think getting familiar with [last year’s] defense and being able to control where the ball was going in the middle. That was a lot different.”
“I feel like I’m doing well in this defense too,” Brown continued. “But this is really my first time getting my feet wet in this defense. So, do I think there’s another level I can do to in this defense? I do.”
So how will DB adjust to a potentially new system and new coaching staff?
“I’ve played in both systems now, so whatever comes next just comes I’m ready for it.”
Wednesday night when the league announces their 2023 Pro Bowl rosters, Brown’s name will likely be called. It’s an honor he says he’d like, but is not worried about since it’s out of his control. But what he can control – his play – has been one of the lone bright spots in arguably the toughest year in franchise history and if this isn’t even his best, the league better watch out.
