Panthers Training Camp Observations – Day 1

Day one of the Carolina Panthers training camp 2023 is officially in the books. Here are a few things that stuck out on the first day of practice.

Versatile Viska:

Laviska Shenault has the size and talent to play multiple roles on the offense. Today at practice he lined up at wide receiver, as well as, in the backfield. During the offseason, head coach Frank Reich compared Shenault’s skillset and what the Panthers would like to do with 49ers’ star receiver Deebo Samuel. Expect to see Versatile Viska in an expanded role this season.

Young ➡️ Chark

Bryce Young didn’t have a perfect practice. The Panthers’ rookie QB had several overthrown balls and a tipped pass. Near the end of practice he found his groove – connecting with several open receivers and also completing the ball in a tight window, but it was his two 30+ yard completions to DJ Chark that wowed fans the most.

Chinn-Strap

Jeremy Chinn quickly became a franchise favorite during his impressive rookie campaign and after an underwhelming 2022 season, the Panthers’ safety is looking to find his groove again. Chinn lined up in multiple spots during the first practice, but took more snaps closer to the line in what appeared to be a hybrid linebacker role. This by no means indicates a position change, but with Chinn historically playing his best when he can use his ball instincts closer to the line, I expect we’ll see him used in that capacity more often.

Excitement is Byke

The Panthers had one of their largest training camp crowds in recent years Wednesday. The excitement around Bryce Young, the new coaching staff and potential of this year’s squad has fans falling back in love with the home team.
