The Charlotte Hornets kicked off their 2022-2023 season in Texas versus the Spurs. Charlotte started off strong, leading the game 38-22 at the end of the first quarter and didn’t let up against a Spurs team that is clearly in the Victor Wenbanyama sweepstakes. Here are the key observations from the Hornets’ win:
Nick Richards is off to a good start:
Nick Richards has been a player who coaches have said was improving and he couldn’t have started this season off any better. In 21 minutes, Richards scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Hornets fans have to be pleased with that. Hopefully, Richards can continue to improve as the center position has been an area that needs improvement.
Dennis Smith is a player to watch off the bench:
When the Hornets signed Dennis Smith Jr. I stated it was a low risk move with potentially a high reward. Smith is a talented player who has fought injuries, but has talent and he played the backup point guard role very well opening night. Smith had 12 points and 4 assists in 21 minutes. Dennis Smith has had some bumps in the road during his NBA career, but hopefully he can carve out a lane in Charlotte.
James Bouknight:
I won’t speak on James Bouknight’s play or talk about the details of his DUI situation, I just hope that whatever he is going through he gets the help and support he needs. Bouknight has talent and I’m rooting for him to get right and reach his potential.
The Hornets next game will be their home opener, Friday night at home versus Zion Williamson and an improving Pelicans team.
