The Carolina Panthers finally got a win, defeating the New Orleans Saint 22-14 at Bank of America Stadium. Here are the postgame notes from Sunday’s contest:
100-YARD MAN
- RB Christian McCaffrey went over the century-mark for the second week in the row, compiling 108 yards on 25attempts.
- McCaffrey joins Browns RB Nick Chubb as the only running backs in the league with multiple 100-yard rushing games on the season. McCaffrey is the only running back to record back-to-back 100-yard rushing games this season. This is the first time he has accomplished this feat since he had a streak of three straight in Week 8-10 of the 2019 season.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
- In WR Laviska Shenanult Jr.’s first career game with the Panthers, he finished the game with two receptions for 90 yards, including a 67-yard touchdown pass on his first career reception with the team. His previous high was a 58-yard reception last season with the Jaguars.
- Panthers have three plays of 50-plus yards in 2022, tying for the most in the NFL this season.
MAIN MAN EDDY
- Place kicker Eddy Piñeiro finished the game with 10 points, including converting all three of his field goal attempts, two of which were of at least 45 yards. This is the second time in Piñeiro’s career where he finished a game making at least two field goals of 40 yards or more. He previously did so in Week Two of 2019 while with the Chicago Bears against the Green Bay Packers.
- Piñeiro is one of three kickers to make at least seven field goals this season without a miss, joining Raiders K Daniel Carlson and Texans K Ka’imi Fairbairn.
GOOD THINGS COME IN TWO
- DL Derrick Brown and CB Jaycee Horn both intercepted Saints QB Jameis Winston. This is the first time the team has recorded multiple interceptions in one game since 10/31/21 vs. Atlanta.
- This marked Brown’s first career interception. Brown is the first Panthers defensive lineman to register an interception since Efe Obada in Week Three 2018 against the Cincinnati Bengals (9/23/18).
- Horn recorded his second career interception, both of his interceptions came against Saints QB Jameis Winston with his first coming on Sept. 19, 2021.
SUCCESS ON DEFENSE AND SPECIAL TEAMS
- This is the first game in team history in which the Panthers have blocked a field goal attempt, recovered a fumble for a touchdown, and recorded two interceptions in one game.
- Today marks the first time since Week 12 of 2004 (against Tampa Bay) that Carolina has scored a defensive touchdown and a blocked field goal.
- LB Frankie Luvu notched his third career forced fumble that was picked up and returned 44 yards by DE Marquis Haynes Sr for a touchdown. It marked the first touchdown of Haynes’ career and is the Panthers first defensive touchdown since Jeremy Chinn scored twice in Minnesota in 2020 (11/20/20).
TALLYING TACKLES
- S Jeremy Chinn finished the game with 8 tackles, one tackle for loss, one quarterback hurry, two pass deflections, and one sack.
- LB Shaq Thompson had four tackles and a pass deflection. He moved into fourth place in franchise history with 583 career tackles (press box stats).
