Panthers Training Camp Observations – Day 2

Things picked up day two of Panthers training camp. There was end zone action, trash talk and near interceptions. Here are my observations from Thursday’s practice.

The Connect

During one of their 7-on-7 red zone periods, Baker Mayfield connected with DJ Moore on three touchdown passes. Mayfield also connected with Moore during an 11 on 11 drill for a 30 yard completion where DJ made leaping catch while falling backward.

The Reps

Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold continue to split reps. Today, Baker worked mainly with the first group. During the 7-on-7 periods Mayfield was 11-16, while Darnold was 12-16.

The Trash Talk

Cornerback Donte Jackson blanketed wide receiver Robbie Anderson on a 7-on-7 red zone play that resulted in an incompletion from Mayfield to Anderson. Afterward, Jackson talked trash to Anderson who had a few things to say himself in response. The exchange gave practice a jolt of energy and increased edge.

The Misses

Speaking of Donte Jackson….By all accounts the 5th year defender had a solid practice, but failed to secure two interceptions. Getting more takeaways is a focus of this defense heading into the season as they look to go from good to great. Finishing those plays is something Jackson says he must do.

The Rotations

Lineups along the offensive line continue to change. Brady Christensen started at left tackle with Ikem Ekwonu behind him. Michael Jordan saw extensive work with the first team at left guard.

The Pads

The Panthers won’t practice in pads until next week. That’s when players will start to separate themselves on the depth chart.
