Heading Into the NBA Draft, What is Going On With the Charlotte Hornets?

To say this off-season has been bizarre for the Charlotte Hornets is an understatement. The Hornets right now look like a mess. Charlotte took their time to hire a coach and when the dust settled they chose Warriors’ assistant coach Kenny Atkinson. Atkinson had reportedly spoken to staff and assistants with the team as the organization was getting ready for the draft, however in a shocking decision, Atkinson decided to stay with Golden State. Some reports were saying Atkinson decided to stay in the Bay area for family reasons, others said it was money for his staff. Whatever the reason, it was a bizarre turn of events that hasn’t happened since 2007 when Billy Donovan spurned the Orlando Magic and went back to the University of Florida.

Now as the Hornets are set to partake in the NBA draft, they currently don’t have a coach, still have to deal with Miles Bridges’ contract situation, as well as try to unload Gordon Hayward’s contract. Mike D’Antoni, who was also a finalist, was in Charlotte Tuesday, but since then not much as been reported. The Hornets need to hire a coach and hire one quickly. The longer this drags out the worse the franchise looks in an important offseason.
