Strap SZN: How Errol Spence’s Win vs Yordenis Ugas Set Up the Biggest Fight in Boxing

Errol Spence Jr. dominated Yordenis Ugas, winning the fight by TKO in the 10th round. Spence punished Ugas throughout the fight to the point where Ugas’ eye was closed completely shut and the doctor ringside decided to it was in the best interest to stop the fight.

Spence and Ugas spent the first 2 rounds feeling each other out. In the 3rd round Spence started finding his range and rhythm, using his jab and working shots to the body to wear Ugas down. Ugas is more of a counter-puncher and couldn’t find enough opportunities on offense to threaten Spence. Things looked like it may have changed for Ugus for a brief moment in the 6th round. Ugas caught Spence with a shot, knocking Spence’s mouthpiece to the floor, but the referee didn’t stop the fight and Ugas was able to catch Spence – knocking him back to the ropes. Even though Spence’s mouthpiece was on the floor, as a boxer you have to protect yourself at all times and Errol got caught slacking. After the 6th round Spence fought angry and used his left uppercut to break Ugas down. Spence dominated the fight rounds 7 through 10 and got his first TKO since 2018 – securing 3 championship belts at welterweight. Spence out landed Ugas in total punches 216-96, in what was a masterclass of boxing.

Immediately after the fight Spence called out Terence Crawford, who holds the other championship belt in the welterweight division and who many see as the Pound for Pound champion in boxing. Crawford tweeted that he wanted the fight as well. Terence Crawford is now a free agent, leaving Top Rank Promotion after defeating Shawn Porter last year. There is no excuses now for this fight not to happen. Both fighters want it, the sport of boxing needs it and boxing fans deserve it.

Errol Spence Jr. vs Terence Crawford will easily be one of the biggest fights in recent memory. I’s time to crown an undisputed champion in the welterweight division.
