The anticipation was massive. Hours before kickoff thousands of fans already arrived in Uptown Charlotte to tailgate and pregame for the first Major League Soccer game in the Queen City. 90 minutes before kickoff many fans were already in their seats and cheering.
The Los Angeles Galaxy came out to loud boos and Charlotte FC came out to a loud roar of ovation. To say Charlotte was ready for this game was an understatement. Nearly the entire stadium was standing up as the game started and chanting “Let’s go Charlotte”.
Charlotte was almost able to get its first goal eight minutes into the game, but the header was defended by LA Galaxy goalkeeper Johnathan Bond. Kahlina was able to stop another goal at the 14-minute mark. Kahlina had a remarkable diving save to stop his 3rd attempt on goal at the 18-minute mark of the first half. The Galaxy was able to have an advantage in time of possession and shot attempts early in the first half.
It was announced that 74,479 fans attended the game – an MLS record. During halftime commissioner Don Garber spoke about how knowledgeable the fans of Charlotte were and the excitement they brought to Bank of America Stadium; High praise from the MLS commissioner.
In the 2nd half Charlotte had several opportunities on goal. The fans were doing their part to cheer on the team, but Charlotte just couldn’t quite connect. LA was able to take advantage of a break to score the match’s only goal. Charlotte had one last shot on goal, but the header wasn’t strong enough and Johnathan Bond was able to make a save.
Despite not being able to score, the Charlotte FC walked off the field to a standing ovation. Overall, it was a historic night for the city of Charlotte the MLS. If only the FC was able to score that first goal in front of the home fans.
Either way, the Queen City showed up and showed out.
