After coming off of a disappointing 5-12 campaign, the Carolina Panthers are looking to regroup. Once again, the draft is the main tool that Carolina has at its disposal. Since the NFL Draft Combine is this week, here are three areas of concern for the Panthers.
Offensive Line
This is nothing new. Carolina’s offensive line issues are well documented. Their failure to provide adequate protection is why Christian McCaffery is often injured. It’s also the reason why Cam Newton suffered the injuries he did. The Panthers’ turnaround must begin here. This is why in a draft that has a solid crop of linemen, it makes sense for the Panthers to trade up to draft one instead of holding on to the sixth pick and run the risk of not drafting one of them.
Quarterback
This position is fluid. Don’t be surprised to see Sam Darnold and Newton back in the fold, however, that doesn’t mean that it’s not a need and the Panthers are aware of. If there’s an opportunity to draft a solid quarterback under the radar, the Panthers should take it. They can take Malik Willis in a later round – if available. Willis has explosiveness, as well as a solid arm. After passing on Justin Fields and trading picks for Darnold, the Panthers can’t afford to make the same mistake twice.
Cornerback
Granted, it doesn’t seem as if there is a concern at this position – after all, the Panthers have a penchant to draft corners. This is a move to prevent a concern. Stephon Gilmore and Donte Jackson are free agents, besides, neither one of them have been the most impactful. If a corner, such as Cincinatti’s “Sauce” Gardner is available, why not draft him and let him compete? Gardner gave up 60 yards in 14 games as a Bearcat. I’m pretty sure he can come in and make an immediate impact.
