Carolina and Wofford meet for the first time on the football field on Saturday, Nov. 20 in the final game at Kenan Stadium in 2021.
Carolina will honor the following players on Senior Day: Grayson Atkins, British Brooks,
Adam Buck, Carson Burgess, Ty Chandler, Joshua Ezeudu, Tomon Fox, Jeremiah Gemmel, Gray Goodwyn, Tyrone Hopper, Sam Howell, Quiron Johnson, Nick Mackovic, Marcus McKethan, Kyler McMichael, Trey Morrison, Alex Nobles, Hunter Shope, Jordan Tucker, Ray Vohasek and Garrett Walson.
About UNC:
- Sam Howell is the second-fastest player in ACC history to reach 10,000 yards of total offense. Howell’s 33 games are tied with Clemson’s Deshaun Watson, trailing only Louisville’s Lamar Jackson at 31 games.
- Sam Howell is the UNC program record holder in total offense, passing yards, passing touchdowns and total touchdowns accounted for.
- Running back Ty Chandler has rushed for 926 yards this season and is only 74 yards shy of registering the 31st 1,000-yard rushing season in UNC history. Chandler is also just 28 yards away from 3,000 rushing yards in his collegiate career after compiling 2,046 yards at Tennessee from 2017-20.
- Josh Downs has 1,109 receiving yards this season and is now only 113 yards away from equaling the program of 1,222 yards set by Hakeem Nicks in 2008. Downs also has 82 receptions in 2021 and is fast approaching Ryan Switzer’s UNC record of 96 catches in 2016.
- Carolina has 13 takeaways on defense this season and is tied with NC State and Pitt for the ACC lead with 10 interceptions. The Tar Heels created just 11 turnovers in 2020.
- Cam’Ron Kelly is tied for the ACC lead with four interceptions, while Ja’Qurious Conley and Cedric Gray and each have a pair of interceptions. Conley, Desmond Evans and Trey Morrison have each made a fumble recovery.
- UNC is enjoying a +45 (109-64) scoring margin in the fourth quarter this season. Carolina led the nation in fourth-quarter scoring margin spanning the 2019 and 2020 seasons at +116.
About Wofford:
- The Terriers have seen 31 players earn first career starts this fall and a total of 52 players have started games.
- Only two players have started all ten games this season – RB Irvin Mulligan and LB Joe Beckett. Only 29 players have seen action in all ten games.
- Wofford is ranked 86th in the nation in total offense and 112th in total defense through nine games.
- The rushing offense was ranked fifth overall at 232.8 yards per game in the spring. Wofford has been ranked in the top ten in rushing offense for 22 straight seasons but are 13th so far in 2021 at 208.6 yards per game.
- The Terriers are being outscored in all four quarters. In the second quarter the Terriers are being outscored 141-80.
- Four players were recognized by the coaches on Preseason All-SoCon team. First team honors went to DL Micheal Mason and OL Zak Kurz. OL Al Hogan and RB Nathan Walker picked up second team honors.
- At quarterback, Peyton Derrick has started six games, with Jimmy Weirick starting one, Bryce Corriston with two starts and Kyle Pinnix with a start. Weirick is 21-of-38 passing for 234 yards along with two rushing touchdowns, while Derrick is 40-of-77 with seven passing touchdowns and 193 rushing yards. Bryce Corriston has 129 rushing yards and 18-of-41 passing for 179 yards.
UNC vs Wofford:
Despite the Terriers playing in the first football game in the state of South Carolina (1889) and the Tar Heels playing the first game in the state of North Carolina (1888), the teams have never played. North Carolina was an original member of the Southern Conference (1921-1953) before joining the ACC. Wofford head coach Josh Conklin faced UNC three times as the defensive coordinator at Pitt and was 0-3. Mack Brown has never faced Wofford.
