Carolina hosts Brown on Friday, November 12, at 9 p.m. The game will be broadcast by the ACC Network (Dalen Cuff, Malcolm Huckaby).
The Tar Heels and Bears are both 1-0. Carolina led from wire-to-wire, built a 26-point lead with 4:28 to play and defeated Loyola Maryland, 83-67, on Tuesday night. Brown led by 22 at the half in an 89-59 opening-night win over Salve Regina.

- Carolina is No. 19 in the Associated Press preseason poll and No. 20 in the coaches’ poll. The preseason ranking was the 929th time the Tar Heels were in named an AP poll, most in college basketball history. Carolina has been ranked at least once in 65 of the poll’s 74 seasons.
- Caleb Love scored 20-plus points for the third time as a Tar Heel. He had 25 at Duke and 20 against Wake Forest as a freshman. It was the seventh time Love has led UNC in scoring. He also led UNC in the season opener last year when he scored 17 against the College of Charleston. It was the second game in a row in which Love did not commit a turnover (also in NCAA first round vs. Wisconsin). Love made 7 of 13 shots from the floor. Carolina is 5-0 when Love shoots at least 50 percent from the floor.
- Brady Manek scored 20 points. It was the 76th time he scored in double figures and the 13th
career game in which Manek scored 20 or more points.
- RJ Davis led UNC with five assists, his second-highest total as a Tar Heel (eight at Iowa last
season).
- Kerwin Walton had 11 points and made three three-point field goals. It was the 13th time he made at least three as a Tar Heel. UNC is 9-4 when he connects on at least three 3FGs.
- Carolina improved to 100-12 in season openers. It was UNC’s 20th straight home opening
victory.
- Carolina was picked to finish third in the ACC by the media at preseason media day in Charlotte on October 12.
- Armando Bacot, who earned third-team AllACC honors in 2021, was selected to the preseason first team. Sophomore guard Caleb Love was chosen for the second team. Love was a member of the ACC’s All-Freshman team last season. Bacot and Dawson Garcia are on the preseason watch list for the Wooden Award. Bacot is also on the list for the Naismith Trophy and the Lute Olson Award. Bacot, Love and Dawson Garcia are on the Basketball Hall of Fame’s preseason watch lists for their respective positional player-of-the-year awards. Love is a candidate for Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year award, Garcia for the Karl Malone
Power Forward of the Year award and Bacot for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year
award.
About Brown
- The Bears are coming off a season-opening win over Salve Regina which saw all 17 players get minutes. The Tar Heels also opened the season with a victory, 83-67 over Loyola.
- David Mitchell and Paxson Wojcik led the way for the Bears in their opener with 13 and 12
points respectively. Wojcik was 4-for-7 from beyond the arc and Mitchell was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
- Freshmen Nana Owusu-Anane and Kino Lilly Jr. saw big minutes for Brown in their debuts.
Owusu-Anane led the team by shooting 71.4% from the field and Lilly Jr. led the team with six assists and three steals.
- The results of the 2021 Ivy League Men’s Basketball Preseason Poll was a perfect example
of what should be expected this season – parity. Five of the league’s eight teams received at
least two first-place votes. Brown was picked to finish fifth with a total of 79 points, and two first-place votes, finishing 36 points ahead of sixth-place Dartmouth. The full results can be seen below.
- Speaking of those first-time Bears, 10 of the 17 on the roster will be putting on a Brown jersey for the first time.
- This season, Tamenang Choh and David Mitchell will serve as the team’s captains for
the second time after being named co-captains in 2019-2020.
UNC vs Brown
- The Tar Heels are 1-0 all-time against Brown. UNC defeated the Bears, 115-63, in Miami on December 28, 1985. Brad Daugherty led the top-ranked Tar Heels with 26 points. Current assistant coach Jeff Lebo had 10 points and five assists.
- Brown is Carolina’s first Ivy League opponent since UNC defeated Yale in the Smith Center
on December 30, 2019.
