Training Camp Notebook: 2nd Day in Pads Brings Different Energy

Wednesday, the Carolina Panthers practiced for the 2nd day in full pads. Here are notes from the session:

Zebra Sighting:

NFL referees were on hand for the first time today – keeping things honest on both sides of the ball. It’s an important step in the team’s progress as they try to limit penalties that killed them last season.

There’s a New Sign in Town:

Speaking of penalties, Rhule and company have implemented a new accountability practice – the DBO aka “Don’t Beat Ourselves” sign. False start? Go touch the DBO sign. Miss an assignment? Head to the DBO sign. Coach Rhule doesn’t view it as punishment, but as a reminder to limit mistakes that can hurt the team during a game.

Message Received:

Matt Rhule wasn’t happy with the way his offense looked yesterday, saying they “weren’t good at all.” Today he acknowledged they were much better. Sam Darnold connected with Robby Anderson, DJ Moore and Christian McCaffrey for touchdowns. It was the first time the team worked in the red zone during training camp and the offense started off cooking. Things settled down in the second team period as the defense ramped things up, but overall it was a good showing on both sides of the ball.

Important Note: PJ Walker connected witht Brandon Zylstra on what was the prettiest touchdown pass and catch of the day.

I Need Your Energy:

It felt different at practice today. The pads were cracking. The speed seemed increased and energy more intense. Guys are settling into the routine of camp and the addition of pads has added another level of competition. You love to see it.

Scuffle Time:

We saw our first practice scuffle between Robby Anderson and Troy Pride. Anderson took exception with how Pride shoved him out of bounds and had a few words for the 2nd year cornerback. It was nothing major and it seemed to end as soon as it started, but a mix-up none the less.

Tomorrow will be the Panthers’ final practice at Wofford for the week. The team will travel home to Charlotte for Friday’s Fan Fest.
