Hornets Pick Up Option On Borrego’s contract

The Charlotte Hornets continue to have confidence in Head Coach James Borrego’s ability to coach this franchise into contention in the near future as the team picked up their option on Borrego’s contact for next season according to the Athletic’s Shams Charania.

Charlotte finished the season at 33-39 for 10th in the East and a berth in the play-in game, falling to the Indiana Pacers in a blowout. At one point in the season, the Hornets were fourth in the East and on the verge of a playoff berth for the first time since 2015. Then, the Hornets were decimated by injuries and finished the season 6-15.

With the addition of LaMelo Ball, the continued emergence of Miles Bridges and the veteran presence and production of Terry Rozier, the Hornets made more strides than ever. While Borrego will enter the last year of his contract next season, his performance next year will determine whether or not the team will agree on a one year extension.

In three seasons, Borrego is 95-124. He and the team made strides this year. However, it doesn’t negate the record in previous seasons, nor does it negate some of the mistakes made along the way this year. The Hornets picking up the team option for Borrego is nothing more than them giving Borrego the benefit of the doubt.

Taking in consideration of the past three seasons and the emergence of the Hornets this season, is Borrego still the right man for the job or is it time for a new voice at the helm of Buzz City? Let us know in the comments.
