Caleb Love Named ACC Freshman of the Week

Pitt sophomore forward Justin Champagnie was named the ACC Player of the Week for the second consecutive week Monday. North Carolina guard Caleb Love earned ACC Freshman of the Week accolades.

ACC men’s basketball weekly honors are determined by a vote of a 15-member media panel and announced on Mondays throughout the regular season.

Champagnie is the first ACC player to notch Player of the Week honors in consecutive weeks since North Carolina’s Joel Berry did so on Jan. 9 and 16, 2017. Champagnie now has claimed Player of the Week honors three times this season. He also claimed the distinction on Dec. 14. It matches Lamar Patterson (2013-14) for the most ACC Player of the Week honors by a Pitt men’s basketball player in a season.

A native of Brooklyn, New York, Champagnie averaged 24.0 points, 11.0 rebounds, 2.5 blocks and 3.5 steals in games against Duke and Wake Forest last week. He went 19-of-27 (.704) from the field for the week, including 6-of-10 (.600) from 3-point range. Champagnie matched a career high with 31 points Tuesday against Duke, going 12-of-15 from the field, to go along with 14 rebounds and a career-best five blocks. He recorded his fifth game with 20 or more points and 10 or more rebounds and became the first player in program history to post at least 30 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks in a game. Champagnie closed the week with 17 points, eight rebounds and a career-high five steals Saturday in a one-point road loss to Wake Forest. He went 7-of-12 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers.

Love averaged 17.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.5 steals in wins over Wake Forest and NC State last week. He was 13-of-28 from the field in those contests. The St. Louis, Missouri, native scored a season-high 20 points with three assists, two blocks and two steals against Wake Forest and followed it up with 15 points, five assists, a block and a steal against NC State. He directed an offense that scored 80-plus points in back-to-back games for the first time this season and shot 50% from the floor in three of the four halves in the two games (.548 in the second half vs. Wake Forest, .568 and .516 vs. NC State).
