North Carolina and Wake Forest go head-to-head on the football field for the second year in a row Saturday. Here’s everything you need to know about the game.
The History:
- The two in-state rivals met every season between 1919 and 2004 (minus 1943) until ACC expansion took hold in the mid-2000’s.
- Carolina enjoys a commanding 42-18-2 edge in games played at home against Wake.
- In the last 10 meetings between the two in-state rivals, Wake holds a 6-4 advantage.
- The Tar Heels have won the last two games played in Kenan in 2015 and in 2011.
- Mack Brown is 8-3 all-ti me against Wake Forest. He went 8-2 against the Deacs as head coach at UNC between 1988-97. The Heels dropped the initial two games, before Brown’s men ran off the next eight in the series.
- Brown defeated Wake, 27-25, in his first game as head coach in 1983 at the helm of Appalachian State. The game was played in Winston-Salem.
The Last Meeting:
Last season, the game was a non-conference matchup between the two league rivals that took place in Winston-Salem, N.C. Wake held on for a 24-18 win that evening.
After comebacks against South Carolina and Miami, the Tar Heels finally dug themselves a hole they couldn’t come back from. They spent the first half getting beaten up front, with the Demon Deacons shutting down UNC’s run game and moving the ball effectively on the ground and through the air. Howell threw two fourth-quarter TD passes to get UNC within 21-18 with 6:09 left, but the defense couldn’t come up with a quick stop to get the ball back quickly.
Wake Forest spent much of the game pushing the Tar Heels around, with Kenneth Walker running for 94 yards and receiver Sage Surratt having a career-best day with nine catches for 169 yards and a 51-yard TD catch from Newman.
The Last Time Out:
- Javonte Williams scored four first-half touchdowns and Sam Howell threw three touchdown passes and rushed for another score in steamrolling rival Duke in a 56-24 victory last Saturday afternoon.
- Wake Forest enjoyed an open weekend. Last time out, the Demon Deacons extended their winning streak to four games with a 38-14 victory at Syracuse on Halloween. Kenneth Walker completed his third three- touchdown game of the season against the Orange.
