The University of North Carolina men’s basketball team will play UNLV in the opening round of the 2020 Maui Invitational, which due to Covid-19 will be played November 30-December 2 at Harrah’s Cherokee Center in Asheville, N.C.
UNC and UNLV will play in the third game of the quarterfinal round on November 30 with the tip scheduled for 7 p.m.
Alabama and Stanford are also on UNC’s side of the bracket and will play in the final game on the tournament’s first day. Davidson plays Texas and Indiana squares off against Providence in the other side of the bracket in the afternoon session.
This is the eighth time the Tar Heels will be competing in the Maui Invitational. Carolina has won the event four times, the second-most titles in its history. UNC won the title in the following seasons: 1999-2000, 2004-05, 2008-09 and 2016-17. The Tar Heels went on to play in the Final Four in 2000 and win the NCAA title in 2005, 2009 and 2017.
Overall, UNC is 20-3 in Maui Invitational games (18-3 in games played in Lahaina, Maui, and 2-0 in Chapel Hill).
Carolina is 4-1 against UNLV. This will be the first meeting between the Tar Heels and Runnin’ Rebels since Dec. 29, 2012, a 79-73 Tar Heel victory in the Smith Center.
