Was this Dabo Swinney Osama Bin Laden Reference Out of Pocket?

During an interview in February, Hall of Fame basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski asked Clemson Head Football Coach Dabo Swinney about recruiting in Alabama. Swinney responded to Krzyzewski’s question about a proverbial recruiting wall around his home state by calling himself “Osama Bin Dabo.”

“I think it was all fun and games early on. It was, ‘Aww, isn’t that sweet’ and all that stuff. I don’t know about walls, but I am kinda like Osama bin Dabo,” Swinney said, laughing. “I have to navigate my way through the caves and back channels too make my way through Alabama these days. They aren’t happy to see me, but it’s all good. It’s a good problem.”

Swinney is now drawing criticism for comparing himself to the former al-Qaeda leader during the recently unearthed interview.

This isn’t the first time Swinney has faced backlash for questionable comments. In 2016, he was criticized for suggesting athletes who refused to stand for the National Anthem in protest of police brutality “move to another country.” The question now is, has Dabo gone too far?
