Wilmington, NC was hit hard by Hurricane Florence over the weekend, and in an effort to help residents of his hometown and state, Charlotte Hornets owner Michael Jordan has donated $2 million to relief efforts.
“You gotta take care of home,” Jordan told the Observer Tuesday, in an exclusive interview about his decision to contribute $2 million to relief and recovery efforts in the wake of Hurricane Florence.
“Wilmington truly is my home. Kept thinking about all those places I grew up going to,” Jordan said. “And the deaths – it was so sad about the babies (that died, including one in Gaston County). You don’t want to see any of that anywhere, but when it’s home, that’s tough to swallow.”
Half of Jordan’s donation will go to the Red Cross and the other half will go to the Foundation for the Carolinas Florence Response Fund.
In addition to his donation, over 100 members of the Hornets’ organization will help pack disaster food boxes at Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina. The goal is to box more than 5,000 packages that will will be shipped to Wilmington, N.C., Fayetteville, N.C., and Myrtle Beach, S.C. The franchise will also give a monetary donation to the organization.
