While NFL Ignores Concerns, NBA Encourages Players to Use Their Power When It Comes to Social Issues

Unlike the NFL, which has chosen to ignore continuing social issues in this country and seemingly discourage its players from acknowledging as well, the NBA, in a joint memo from the league and its player’s association, has encouraged its players to use their power to make a difference.

“None of us operates in a vacuum. Critical issues that affect our society also impact you directly. Fortunately, you are not only the world’s greatest basketball players — you have real power to make a difference in the world, and we want you know that the Players Association and the League are always available to help you figure out the most meaningful way to make that difference.”

Given the social climate in this country, it’s downright disrespectful  for the NFL to ignore what’s going on, especially when the majority of players who make the league are directly affected by what’s going on.  I salute the NBA for showing its members that they aren’t invisible, for show them that they aren’t just cash cows to be used and discarded when they are no longer useful, for acknowledging that these are men with feelings who deal with these  social issues every day, for recognizing that these athletes have REAL power and more importantly, encouraging them to use it.
