Steve Spurrier has a special place in his heart for Duke, the school that gave him his first head coaching job. So much so, that the South Carolina ball coach has been lobbying for the two to face each other in the near future.
Spurrier dropped a few hints about a potential match-up on a media conference call promoting the Gamecocks’ opening game against the Tar Heels.
“I heard there was some interest in maybe playing Duke,” Spurrier said. “Duke is a top-notch program now as we know. I love Duke University. I owe a lot to Duke, and I heard there were some conversations we might play them. If that would happen and it would be good for Duke also, I would like to do that.”
Discussions have proposed a neutral site meeting in either 2017 or 2018. Duke and South Carolina haven’t played each other since 1991.
