Who would have thought? This year has given the sports world so many unimagined scenarios. Add undefeated and nationally ranked Liberty facing NC State to that list. Speaking with other members of the media, this game has turned into a must watch on many levels.
Most saw this matchup as a NC State sure-win when the modified schedule was released. The Flames, who were a very respectable 8-5 last season, have become a serious contender as an FBS independent. However, you would still expect ACC programs to top the independent program from Lynchburg…correct? Liberty erased those doubts already this season – knocking off two ACC opponents in Syracuse and Virginia Tech. They’ve accepted the fact that they are still underdogs, even though they have won 11 games straight dating back to last season.
NC State coach Dave Doren knows all about being the underdog with an unblemished record. In 2012 he guided Northern Illinois University to a program record season and Orange Bowl appearance before heading to Raleigh to lead the Wolfpack.
Earlier this week Doeren spoke about the underdog chip Liberty plays with.
“That locker room is full of guys that felt they could have played at a higher level…those kids will have a chip on their shoulder when they play a power five team.”
Even with that being said, I’m sure Doeren will relay the message of knowing that feeling of us against the world. “We’re going to get a team that believes, because they haven’t loss this year,” Doeren added.
The Pack have also played with a chip on their shoulder this season, as many deemed this a rebuild year from the beginning. Take away the early Virginia Tech loss and abysmal second half in Chapel Hill, NC, and State is one late-stop against Miami away from being a 6-2 team and surpassing last year’s win total. Both teams are playing with a huge amount of confidence. With a hot Flames offense against a State defense that can control the line of scrimmage, something has to give right? I just can’t believe I’m looking forward to it.
